Clos Rougeard is one of the most revered and mysterious wine estates in France, located in the village of Chacé within the Saumur-Champigny appellation of the Loire Valley. With origins dating back to 1664, the estate gained legendary status under the stewardship of brothers Charly and Nady Foucault in the late 20th century. Their dedication to organic viticulture, low yields, and minimalist winemaking transformed Clos Rougeard into a cult name among collectors and sommeliers worldwide.
Clos Rougeard: The Cult Icon of the Loire Valley
The domaine spans about 10 to 15 hectares of clay-limestone soils, divided into multiple small parcels, many with vines over 40 years old—and some exceeding 100. Clos Rougeard is best known for producing four wines: three pure Cabernet Franc reds—Le Clos, Les Poyeux, and the ultra-rare Le Bourg—and a powerful Chenin Blanc from Brézé. The red wines undergo natural fermentation, are aged for up to 24 months in oak (with Le Bourg receiving 100% new barrels), and see no fining or filtration.
The estate’s underground tuffeau cellars provide ideal aging conditions, contributing to the wines' longevity and complexity. A turning point in Clos Rougeard’s global acclaim came when the 1990 Le Bourg, tasted blind alongside Bordeaux First Growths, outshone even Château Pétrus. From that moment, Clos Rougeard became a symbol of purity, precision, and rarity, with bottles fetching hundreds—and sometimes thousands—of dollars on the secondary market.
After Charly Foucault’s death in 2015, the estate was sold in 2017 to the Bouygues family, who also own Château Montrose in Bordeaux. Despite fears of change, the Bouygues have preserved the estate’s organic practices and artisanal spirit, while gradually investing in improvements. Today, Clos Rougeard continues to craft wines that rival the greatest expressions of Cabernet Franc, maintaining its cult status and earning the admiration of connoisseurs worldwide.
