Chartogne Taillet is a family owned grower Champagne estate in Merfy, part of the Montagne de Reims, with roots dating back to the 17th century. Today it spans around 11–12 hectares of vineyards planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, and the rare Arbanne . Alexandre Chartogne took over in 2006 at just 23, bringing fresh energy and a passion for expressing each plot's individuality. The estate champions organic methods—no herbicides, horse ploughing, cover crops, and even chickens and sheep in the vineyard—to nurture living soil.
Chartogne Taillet: Terroir Driven Grower Champagne
A hallmark of Chartogne Taillet is its plot by plot vinification, using indigenous yeasts and small oak barrels, stainless steel, concrete eggs, or amphorae depending on the terroir. This approach yields a range of terroir specific cuvées, from flagship Cuvée Sainte Anne to single‑vineyard wines like Les Barres, Les Couarres, Heurtebise, Orizeaux, and Chemin de Reims. Les Barres, notably from a 1952 Pinot Meunier plot, is vinified in older oak with minimal intervention, resulting in a signature saline, mineral style.
The estate's Chardonnay from Avize and Oger appears in the Hors Série Blanc de Blancs, a nod to expansion into Côte des Blancs terroir. Wines are aged on lees for months, often in barrel, then aged further in cellars on chalk before release. Sainte Anne NV, a blend of Merfy plots, offers balanced acidity, creamy mousse, and terroir-driven elegance.
Focused on minimal dosage and authentic expression, Chartogne Taillet wines are praised for their energy, purity, and sense of place. Critics and growersites note their wines as “undeniably mineral and soil‑driven” and “compelling, often thrilling”. Collectors also appreciate the value—one Reddit user commented on the 2015 Les Barres:
“Fine acidity… biscuity on the nose… very very long.”
Despite international acclaim, Alexandre maintains modest production and pricing, ensuring the wines remain accessible. Chartogne Taillet remains the only grower producer in Merfy, bringing that overlooked terroir back into the Champagne spotlight. Through meticulous viticulture and parcel-based winemaking, the estate exemplifies how terroir can be articulated with precision and respect. Who knew Merfy could shine so brightly?
