Founded over five generations ago, Domaine Livio Felluga revitalized the terroir of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, particularly the coveted Rosazzo hills, positioning itself as a benchmark producer of Italian white wines. The estate officially began its modern viticultural journey when Livio Felluga acquired vineyards in Rosazzo in the 1950s, transforming abandoned hillsides into thriving vineyards. In 1956, Livio introduced his iconic map-based label—the "Carta Geografica"—which symbolized both the geography and identity of his wines.
Domaine Livio Felluga: Pioneer of Friulian Elegance and Innovation
Livio was not content with prevailing bulk-wine norms; he pursued single-varietal bottlings such as Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, and Friulano, asserting white wine’s potential in a red-dominated landscape. The 1981 launch of Terre Alte, a blend of Friulano, Pinot Bianco, and Sauvignon Blanc, marked a milestone—becoming one of Italy’s most prestigious whites and eventually DOCG-certified. Today, the estate spans approximately 159 hectares of vineyards out of a larger 228-hectare estate, subdivided into over 320 individual plots for high terroir transparency.
The estate grows 14 grape varieties across diverse micro-sites, with vines interspersed among olive groves, woodlands, and hillsides to maintain biodiversity. Livio Felluga pioneered the use of screwcaps for white wines, particularly under Andrea Felluga, enhancing freshness and aromatic purity in their bottlings. The winery’s hallmark wines include Terre Alte, Abbazia di Rosazzo (primarily Friulano with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Bianco), and the handcrafted Curubella Pinot Grigio and Sigar Friulano, fermented in terracotta vessels for mineral complexity.
Winemaker Andrea Felluga, who took leadership in 1994, continues to uphold his father's obsession with quality—his mantra remains "qualità, qualità, qualità". The estate produced its first Appassimento-style Pinot Bianco blend, Illivio, for Livio’s 85th birthday, underlining their innovative spirit. With annual production around 800,000 bottles, Livio Felluga balances scale with a commitment to small-lot precision and vineyard diversity.
Sustainability is central: vineyards are managed organically with no herbicides, reliance on renewable energy, and efforts to reduce plastic and protect local woodland areas. Granddaughter Laura Felluga joined in 2018, with experience from Bordeaux, New Zealand, and China, reinforcing the family tradition while bringing a global perspective. Her involvement underscores the estate’s dedication to heritage, innovation, and representation of place in every bottle.
