La Guardiense is one of Italy’s most respected wine cooperatives, located in Guardia Sanframondi, in the Campania region. Founded in 1960 by 33 grape growers, it has grown into a powerful consortium of nearly 1,000 members cultivating over 1,500 hectares of vineyards. Situated in the Sannio hills at approximately 350 meters above sea level, the cooperative enjoys ideal conditions for growing native grape varieties like Falanghina and Aglianico. Over the decades, La Guardiense has moved from quantity-focused production to an emphasis on quality, innovation, and sustainability.
La Guardiense: A Beacon of Cooperative Winemaking in Southern Italy
The winery is particularly renowned for its “Janare” line, which showcases small-batch wines rooted in local tradition and folklore. Sparkling wine production has become a key part of its identity, with a state-of-the-art facility inaugurated in 2014 allowing both Charmat and Metodo Classico techniques. Renowned enologist Riccardo Cotarella and winemaker Marco Giulioli lead the technical team, ensuring precision in every bottle.
La Guardiense is a pioneer in environmental responsibility, using solar energy and sustainable farming techniques to reduce its ecological footprint. Its structure rewards excellence—selecting top grapes for premium cuvées and recognizing standout growers within the cooperative. Despite producing hundreds of thousands of bottles annually, La Guardiense maintains a sharp focus on terroir and authentic expressions of Campanian grapes.
Signature wines like the Calvese Falanghina and Coste del Duca Aglianico demonstrate elegance, minerality, and regional character. Tre Bicchieri awards from Gambero Rosso underline the high regard for their quality. The cooperative also plays a cultural role, promoting wine tourism and regional identity through its brands and events. Ultimately, La Guardiense exemplifies how tradition, community, and innovation can come together to elevate southern Italian wine on the world stage.
