Founded in 1892 by Piero Coppo in Canelli, Piedmont, Coppo is one of Italy’s oldest family-run wineries, stewarding tradition and territory for over 120 years . The estate spans around 52 hectares across Monferrato, growing Barbera, Moscato, Chardonnay, Nebbiolo, and Pinot Noir. Coppo: Piedmont’s Heritage Winery in the ‘Underground Cathedrals’
Coppo’s underground wine cellars—excavated by hand in the 18th–19th centuries under limestone hills—extend over 5,000m² and reach a depth of 40m. Known as the “Underground Cathedrals,” they offer ideal humidity and temperature control and were labeled a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2014. These extraordinary tunnels house traditional-method sparkling wines (Alta Langa DOCG), classic whites like Monteriolo Chardonnay, and Moscato d’Asti.
In the early 1980s, Coppo pioneered the modern style of Barbera, lowering yields and aging in barriques to reveal the grape’s true potential—Pomorosso quickly became a local and international star. They also produce fine Gavi DOCG, Barolo DOCG (under special ministerial permission), and a range of DOC and DOCG wines that highlight Piedmont’s terroir. Integration of environmentally respectful practices underscores their viticultural philosophy.
In 2021, Coppo entered a strategic partnership with La Morra’s Dosio Group to support expansion—while keeping Roberto, Paolo, and Luigi Coppo in leadership roles. Annual production hovers around 400,000–450,000 bottles, balancing artisanal quality with sustainable scaling.
