Domaine Alex Moreau, located in Chassagne-Montrachet, is the result of the 2020 split of the historic Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils––Alexandre “Alex” Moreau now leads with 5.7 ha of family vineyards originally planted in 1809. The estate continues a five-generation legacy, with Alex trained both at home and abroad before taking full charge. His vineyards include prestigious Côte de Beaune sites such as Champs Gains, Morgeot, Chenevottes, and Les Grandes Ruchottes, each planted to old vines averaging around 40 years.
Domaine Alex Moreau: Mineral-Driven Elegance in Burgundy
Farming is organic and biodynamic, with ploughed soils, cover crops, and no synthetic treatments, ensuring healthy terroir expression. Yields are strictly controlled through pruning, green harvesting, and manual picking, emphasizing quality and precision. In the cellar, Alex practices minimal intervention: indigenous yeast fermentations, barrel aging with measured new oak, and no filtration to preserve clarity and texture.
The domaine offers both whites and reds: Chardonnay from village to premier cru, including Bâtard‑Montrachet and Criots‑Bâtard‑Montrachet, and Pinot Noir from old-vine Chassagne reds and Bourgogne Rouge. Whites see 10–50% new oak and up to 20 months élevage, while reds are aged 12–20 months without filtration and minimal fining. The smaller Bourgogne Blanc expresses fine-boned mineral purity, while village and premier cru whites bring density, citrus, and saline length.
Reds like the Vieilles Vignes exhibit elegant tannins, red cherry fruit, and mineral structure, often surpassing expectations for their appellation . Critics applaud the estate’s depth and aging potential: wines are rich and harmonious, yet vibrant and precise. The limited production—just 5 ha—makes these wines highly sought after and often allocated.
In the wake of his brother Benoît’s departure, Alex now fully steers the domaine, with his wife Martine as partner, maintaining impeccable consistency and style. They produce around 40,000 bottles annually, focusing on terroir authenticity and long-term aging capacity. With a controlled, elegant use of oak and minimal cellar manipulations, Domaine Alex Moreau stands as a premier expression of Chassagne-Montrachet––its wines are balanced, mineral, and deeply reflective of their vineyard origins.
